Here's How To Repair an XBOX 360 From Home

By Pete Mason

If you're reading this right now, your worst nightmares have become a reality - your Xbox 360 is broken. Maybe it was fine at first, but then that green ring of lights turned red, and you knew something was really wrong.

Like anyone in this situation, you'd like to know how to fix your Xbox 360.

Up until now, if you wanted to fix a broken Xbox, your options were limited, unusual, and not very reliable.

For instance, you might have heard about or tried what's called the towel trick. If you don't know about it, don't be tempted!

After all, wrapping your Xbox 360 in a towel is more likely to set the machine on fire than it is to fix it. You could cause a lot of damage.

This trick, like many others, is another Internet myth.

Another fix that's nearly a myth is the idea that cracking open your Xbox 360's case and getting out the soldering iron is a good idea. You might see this suggestion online, but think twice before using it. Your Xbox 360 is a delicate piece of electronics, and only a tech should mess with it. Otherwise, you'll just do damage and void the warranty.

So what's left?

Another option available to you is following advice from Microsoft. They'd like you to send your Xbox 360 back for a professional repair. It's true that a repair by the pros will work the best, but if your warranty's expired, you'll be paying a hundred forty dollars, plus shipping. Then, you'll have to wait six to eight weeks to see your console again! That's a lot of time and could cost you a lot of money.

Of course, if your warranty is still valid, you'll be able to avoid the hundred and forty dollar charge. However, you'll have to pay for shipping, pack the Xbox 360 up securely enough to return it to Microsoft, and wait the two months for its return.

Many people are simply not willing to pay that much or wait that long.

Is there a better option? Well, if you don't want to deal with the expense and wait, you can look for a reliable repair guide for your console. It's not impossible to fix an Xbox, but you do have to know what you're doing! The Internet is full of bad information, so find a source you really trust.

If you fix your Xbox at home, you won't lose your system for months at a time, and you can avoid spending the repair money, too.
