Who Is Andy Warhol And What Were The Best Warhol Paintings?

By Tom Gurney

After Marilyn Monroe's death Andy Warhol produced several series of paintings of her, based on the same original photo. Warhol enjoyed her connection between death and celebrity cult and so chose her as a Warhol Star. Warhol tried out many varieties of color combinations.

The series of paintings based on the image of Soup Cans also a key part of Warhol's art career and remain popular today. Campbell's Soup brand became famous around the world thanks to the exposure. As with Marilyn Monroe, Campbell's Soup Cans was a subject that Warhol constantly re-approached with new ideas for many years.

Warhol's shoes is a well-known subject from his career which gained prominence very early on, before his art style was even to gain momentum. Warhol's professional illustrations along this theme helped him to progress his career. The combination of brightly coloured shoes against dark background proved hugely popular. The success of Warhol as an illustrator helped him to progress into his other art mediums which eventually led to the formation of the Pop Art movement, and his flurry into Film and TV.

After a near fatal shooting Andy Warhol featured the subject of death, and related items to that, quite commonly in his art, whereas previously he had not. The Guns series is perhaps the most popular of these and is regularly discussed by Warhol fans even today. The repetition style of Warhol was used with this series to underline the danger and threat of guns in American society at that time.

The Cow series of Warhol paintings is a brighter, more upbeat series that contrasted to some of his later works. Psychedelic yellow ensured the boldness of this series. The cow wallpaper was released by Warhol after an obsessive and characteristic repetitive design of the original cow photo, that was taken from an agricultural print journal.

Aside from the Warhol star portraits, Warhol also produced many self-portraits throughout his career, some of which were deemed quite dark in thought and not as colourful as his most loved style. Warhol's reflection on himself gained great interest, as much in fact as when he looked at others.
