Crabtree Hurts Himself More than San Francisco

By Barry Thomas

Everyone who's been keeping up with the football world is probably aware of Michael Crabtree's role in the news of late. The rookie wide receiver is threatening to sit out the entire season because he's not happy with the terms of his contract. I'm not at all surprised to see this.

Crabtree thinks more highly of himself than any NFL experts do, as much as they all fully believe in his potential. Crabtree is a prima donna though. Even in college, he refused to eat the team-supplied food and would insist on someone bringing him food from an outside restaurant. This is typical behavior on his part. Let's think about what might happen if he does skip out on the season. It would obviously hurt the Niners if they lost out on their pick, but it'd hurt Crabtree even more.

Since he's gunning for that top-5 type salary, does he really think that someone will pick him as a top-5 player in 2010 seeing as how they risk a drama queen who may not even play? Besides, the 2010 draft class is actually more talented than the 2009 class, so he'll have more competition.

Crabtree's stock was at its all-time high in 2007, as he had one of the best seasons for a wide receiver in recent memory. His numbers dropped off a bit in 2008, but people were willing to see past that. Still, Crabtree would have gone higher in 2008 than in 2009, and I'm sure he'd go even lower in 2010.

Look at Dez Bryant, for example, who put up better numbers than Crabtree in 2008 and may have a better 2009. Bryant could very well be deemed more valuable than Crabtree should they both be eligible in 2010.

Not to mention.....Crabtree played in Mike Leach's prolific spread offense.....an offense that does not easily translate into the NFL's basic drop-back offense. OSU runs a pro-style spread under its Offensive Coordinators Larry Fedor and Gunter Brewer. So, while OSU is going shotgun most of the time.....make no mistake about it....they're a run-first team. That offense, translates easier into the NFL.

The Niners have just about accepted the fact that Crabtree won't play for the team this season, and they don't want to involve themselves with a selfish player of his kind. Crabtree's making the bigger mistake here, as his stock is sinking by the day.

Well, flip the switch, let the reality check turn on......Crabtree will likely be offered less money next year, than he is being offered right now. But alas, let him hold out.....the NFL does not need any more overinflated ego's. Remember what happened to Mike Williams? If he sits out, then good for him, and even better for the league. He seems to forget that even if he puts together a Hall of Fame worthy career.....he's not going to be the best WR the Bay Area has seen.
