Spyderco Caly 3: Pocket Knife Review

By Liam C. Miller

If you want an EDC that will last for years, look into what Spyderco is making. They make awesome knives and the Caly 3 is nearly perfect in all aspects. The Caly 3 is small but you get a lot of knife for the size. You will hardly notice it in your pocket. The Caly 3 is very good. Some would say, perfect. There are 2 different Caly 3's to choose from. A carbon fiber version and a G10 version. The carbon fiber version has a blade steel made of ZDP and the G10 version has a blade steel of VG-10. I choose the G10 version simply because it was more practical. The handle is very ergonomic. It fits in my hand perfectly. It is slightly heavier than my Spyderco Delica but it feel more robust.

Opening the knife, I notice the deployment was not that great. It had a sandy feeling to it but after a few hundred openings, it was fine. The lock back is strong. One word to describe it, "confident". I never worry about it failing on me. Also this makes the knife ambidextrous as I am left-handed. Southpaws, this is a knife to look at. This Caly 3 has a great clip. It's design is similar to a wire hanger but it is strong. Slipping it in and out of your pocket is easy. It rides deep in your pocket. Just a great design. Spyderco should put this clip on all their knives.

The blade is full flat ground. This make this blade an excellent slicer. Both steels hold an edge for a long time. The ZDP steel outperforms the VG10 steel but it is harder to sharpen. Using the Spyderco Sharpmaker, I can put a good honing edge on my knife. Sharpening knifes is a skill. I can do it freehand but the Sharpmaker makes things easier.

Some weeks ago, I saw a video where a man modified his knife with a zip tie. This made his knife "waved". Emerson patented their "wave" design which allows the knife the ability to be opened while being pull out of the pocket. I adopted this zip tie mod and I found it very effective. My Caly 3 gets used hard. Some people like to keep their knives clean and there is nothing wrong with that. I, however, like to keep my knives for utility purposes. I like to use my knives.

I love this knife! I also own a Spyderco Native and I used to own a Delica Wave. The Caly 3 is my favorite knife. If the laws would allow it, I would carry a Police 3 G10. Spyderco makes great knives and once you own 1, you have to have more. This knife is so beautiful. It is a gentleman's folder. I purchased mine for around $100 but I am sure you can get it cheaper now. Either way, you will be glad you bought this knife. This knife is a jewel.
