Another Loss for NFL's Lions

By Michael Paulson

Matthew Stafford had his debut, and it was, how shall I say, disappointing? 16 of 37 for 205 yards and three picks.

It was not that he was throwing unattractive passes. They were well crafted spirals that merely happened to wind up in New Orleans Saints' possession.

Stafford's precision will be criticized for a long period until he starts pulling off passes such as the exceptional looking connection with Calvin Johnson on a common basis.

And just what did we all forecast to have occur? All those who had been in support of starting Stafford, allow me to be the 1st to proclaim to you, there will be further games like this until he gets it. Although where was the running game? Where was the offensive line that showed such promise in the preseason? Where was the defense?

Ah yes, the defense - a category that was largely disregarded in the 2009 draft as the team decided to concentrate on scoring.

No sacks against Drew Brees, which is not truly startling as he was only sacked 13 times during the 2008 year, although wow, I don't believe they laid a finger on him the whole game.

I recognize I had speculated the Lions capturing between six to eight games this season...but presently I'm not so certain. They won't go winless; or I hope not.

The Lions are in a steep learning curve, and I think Jim Schwartz, Scott Linehan, and Gunther Cunningham are the fitting coaches to guide the team in the right direction.

I'm furthermore rather certain that because of this game, the Lions will be doing drills until they keel.

Although I'm not as scared regarding the offense as I am the defense. The Lions did score 27 points, and most of the time, that is going to win you a small number of games.

But giving up 515 yards, 28 first downs, and 6 touchdown passes will not secure you a place at the Super Bowl unless you are purchasing a ticket.
