The playing area should never be in an area where people may need to pass through. Not only can it be extremely dangerous, but it will also interrupt your game.

Install a backboard behind the dartboard to protect your wall. This will insure that a missed shot doesn't hit the wall and scar it.

It's also advisable to ensure there isn't a dip in the floor at the area where you'll be throwing from. Many people nowadays choose to buy a special mat because not only will it help to protect your floors from stray darts, but it also allows you measure the throwing distance accurately.

The board should 5 feet 8 inches height wise from the dead center of the bullseye to the floor. If you are not using specially made mat then you have to measure off, and mark the throw line onto the floor. Locate the throw line 7 feet and 9.25 inches away from your dartboard.
